ABSEILING

 

 

 

About the Advanced Abseil course.

The Advanced Abseil program is ideal for those with some prior abseiling experience but who now want to rig their own systems in a safe and efficient manner, generally for recreational purposes. The course content is nationally endorsed (there is an assessment protocol) and is designed to fit in between Abseil 1 and Abseil Leader. During the course we look at the following areas in detail:

Equipment selection & maintenance, anchor selection & anchor system rigging, rope deployment, safety lines & tethers, rigging & management of top belays & release systems, dealing with non routine situations, prusik hitches & improvised ascending rigs, assisted & non assisted hoists, crowd hauls, vector pulls, z drags & other mechanical advantage systems for improvised retrievals, improvised descending devices, communications & a host of other material.

 

Duration

The course runs over three days or 24 contact hours.

 

The course identifies the following units:

SRO ABS 003A Apply abseiling skills in a broad range of contexts

SRO ROP 001A Safeguard a person using a single rope belay system

SRO ROP 002A Use belay systems to safeguard self and others

SRO ROP 003A Select suitable natural and/or fixed anchors for roping activities

SRO ROP 004A Establish belay systems using natural and/or fixed anchors for roping activities

SRO ROP 005A Rig a rope pitch

SRO ROP 006A Perform vertical rescues of self and others

SRO ROP 007A Select an extensive range of suitable anchors for roping activities

SRO ROP 008A Establish belay systems for a broad range of contexts

SRO ROP 009A Use a broad range of techniques to rig rope pitches

 

If you have done little or no abseiling before then Abseil 1 is the course you need to get you started.

Pre requisites & result

Abseil 1 or equivalent

SROABN001A Demonstrate simple abseiling skills

SROABN003A Apply single pitch abseiling skills on natural surfaces

SROABN004A Establish ropes for single pitch abseiling on natural surfaces

 

A Statement of Attainment - Advanced Abseiling Techniques will be awarded on successful completion of the assessment.
