Concept

Map reading and navigation for the bushwalker, outdoor leader or anyone who wants to be able to go 'off the beaten track'.

 

Training units covered:

NAV01   Interpret topographic maps and map features

NAV02   Interpret marginal information

NAV03   Interpret map grid systems (MGRS, UTM, Lat. / Long.)

NAV04   Determine positions as grid references (4, 6, 8 & 10 Figure & Lat. / Long. positions)

NAV05   Interpret map scales

NAV06   Interpret contour lines and contour intervals

NAV07   Interpret True, Grid and Magnetic North (TN, GN & MN)

NAV08   Calculate grid bearings

NAV09   Interpret magnetic declination (Grid / Magnetic angle diagram)

NAV10   Correctly use a magnetic compass

NAV11   Calculate magnetic bearings

NAV12   Determine position by resection

NAV13   Calculate slope (gradient)

NAV14   Demonstrate techniques to bypass obstacles

NAV15   Determine intervisibility

NAV16   Demonstrate celestial navigation techniques

NAV17   Navigate at night or in low visibility

 

Duration

2 days and one evening field

No prior experience required.

Statement of Attainment stating the subject units covered on the course.
